CONTEMPORARY ART

CONTEMPORARY ART

The subject of Contemporary Art is so varied and often evokes much debate, but in the end it is left up to the observer to form his or her’s opinion.

Contemporary Art found it’s origin in the « Incohérent » movement (1882-1893) then with dadaism (originating during the first world war).

One of the first monumental pièces was the famous urinal by Marcel Duchamp.

The birth of photography lead to many « Avant Garde » movements, wich rejected the most restricted movements of the past and Figurative Art.

Artists such as Malevitch (Carré noir), Yves Klein (monochromes), Rauschenberg, Warhol, Manzoni (Merda d’artista)and recently Richard Serra (Splashing), Andres Serrano and Maurizio Cattelan, have also been responsible for laying the foundation of what has became Contemporary Art.

Contemporary Art is a réflexion of the times and being « the Art of life », it can be described as esthetic, intimate, erotic, despicable, as well as sordid and unbearable.

It is important that collectors invest their money en pièces that are appealing to them and try not to become involved in the sometimes négative rhetoric of art critics.

The Art market can be elitist and concentrated on a small world of gallery owners, auction houses, Art critics and business people, placing too much importance on the monetary value.

But initiativs such as « The Affordable Art Fair » and certainly the Internet, allow one to the world of Contemporary Art.
